The Child Theme
Your site runs on Pegasus Child, a child theme that sits on top of the Pegasus parent theme.
Why a child theme?
Section titled “Why a child theme?”The parent theme (Pegasus) gets updates. If your site’s custom code were added to the parent theme directly, the next update would wipe it out. The child theme keeps your site’s customizations separate, so the parent theme can be updated safely.
How customizations work
Section titled “How customizations work”To change the HTML or PHP of part of the theme, a developer copies that file into the child theme and edits the copy. For example, to change the Header One layout:
- Copy the code from
header-one.phpin the main Pegasus theme. - Create a
templatesfolder in the child theme (if it isn’t there already) and createheader-one.phpin it. - Paste the code into the new file.
- Make the changes there. If the parent theme’s version of the file changes in a future update, repeat these steps.
What this means for you
Section titled “What this means for you”- ✅ Keep Pegasus Child active under Appearance → Themes.
- ⛔ Don’t switch to the parent Pegasus theme or another theme. Your site’s customizations would disappear from the live site.
- ⛔ Don’t edit theme files in Appearance → Theme File Editor. See Plugins and Updates.
- 💬 Need a layout change that the options panel can’t do? Ask us. That’s a child-theme change.
Developers: the child theme loads the parent theme’s stylesheet plus its own js/pegasus-custom.js, and its style.css declares Template: pegasus. The repo is Visionquest-Development/pegasus-child.
